Loose Lead Walking
The secret behind pleasurable walks
Walking Woes
Problem | What is it? | Solution |
---|---|---|
Yo-yo dogs | This is when your pup takes a treat and then rushes quickly forward to the end of the leash | To combat a yo-yo dog you have to work on duration. Start with a high reinfocement rate then switch between food and praise, so your pup learns they have to stay close in order to get a fab reward but they wont quite be sure when it's coming. |
Leash Shakes | When your puppy decides it is more fun to play tug with the leash | Avoid tugging back, if your pup knows 'drop it' already then ask for a drop and quickly cover the lower part of the leash with your hand. |
Stop! | When your pup sits down and refuses to move | With very small puppies they are usually just tired out from walking. Avoid pulling on the leash, it will only cause them to hunker down more. Instead use a high pitched voice, clap your hands, get down to their level to encourage them, if all else fails, pick them up. |
Pulling | Getting to the end of the lead and trying to keep going | Stop! Pulling on the leash must not be reinforced, every step with a tight leash increases the pulling behaviour. Practice the loose leash walking exercises. |
Bark, lunge, bark | Leash reactivity | Combatting leash reactivity involves counter conditioning how your dog responds to a stimulus, there are all sorts of things your dog might react to but it's such a huge topic, it has it's own page. |
